FAQs

Coach Mark, What Do You Do?

I help members of the Sun City Hilton Head Pickleball Club develop the technique, skills, strategy, and precision needed to play at a higher level.

My personalized approach to coaching begins by identifying your highest-priority needs and creating a clear roadmap for improvement. I use a variety of coaching strategies and tools to accelerate your learning and performance, including coached gameplay, video analysis, and focused drilling and training sessions.

I work with players at every level of skill—from newcomers to advanced.

Why Do Players Come to You?

  • To become better players. I help players develop the technique, form, footwork, strategy, and mindset required to play with greater control, consistency, and confidence. My coaching model is simple: Control + Consistency = Confidence.
  • To enjoy the learning process. My coaching style is friendly, patient, supportive, nonjudgmental, learner-centered, and results-driven.
  • To perform at a higher level. I help players improve their performance in both recreational and tournament play. For several of my clients—including LaLani, Dale, and Gloria—that improvement has helped them bring home gold medals!

Are There Other Reasons?

Yes, here are a few more:

  • I am an experienced teaching professional with certifications from PCI, PPR, and IPTPA, along with more than 5,000 hours of on-court coaching experience.
  • I have the playing, analytical, communication, and ball-feeding skills needed to help players learn and improve. Accurate, consistent ball feeding is an essential—and sometimes overlooked—skill for coaches and teaching professionals.
  • I use two AI-powered platforms that integrate visual feedback with data-driven analytics. This technology can accelerate learning and support a basic improvement principle: You can’t improve what you don’t measure.
  • I provide a positive and supportive coaching experience—what I call the Coach Mark Experience—built around three core values: Educate, Encourage, and Empower.

Do You Have a Coaching Philosophy?

Yes. I’m an advocate and practitioner of a style of pickleball I call “Play Slower and Lower.”

This approach focuses on developing the control, consistency, and precision needed to execute all nine core pickleball shots from anywhere on the court.

When you learn to slow the game down with quality dinks, drops, drives, volleys, and resets, you can disrupt your opponents’ rhythm and take greater control of the game’s tempo. You can also create popups and other attackable balls to put-away and help you win more points, games, matches, and medals.

Why Focus on Consistency?

A consistent pickleball player keeps the ball in play, limits mistakes, and executes shots with good control. Rather than trying to win every rally with a fast, risky shot, a consistent player relies on patience, precision, and smart decisions.

Several qualities indicate consistency:

  • Fewer unforced errors
  • Longer rallies
  • Accurate shot placement
  • Smart shot selection
  • Dependable execution under pressure

Consistency matters for two important reasons:

  • Players and teams that make fewer unforced errors generally win more points, games, and medals.
  • Advancing to a higher skill level requires you to execute a wider range of shots with greater consistency, control, and precision.

What Goals Have You Helped Clients Achieve?

Over the years, I have helped players:

  • Learn proper shot mechanics
  • Play with greater consistency and precision
  • Make smarter shot decisions
  • Improve agility, movement, and footwork
  • Recognize and correct their own mistakes
  • Detect and counter their opponents’ strategies
  • Strengthen their defense
  • Master soft shots and the “slow game”
  • Develop a dependable backhand
  • Apply a clear and effective doubles strategy
  • Create more offensive opportunities
  • Demonstrate the skills needed for a higher skill-level rating from IPTPA
  • Develop mental resilience and learn the “tournament mindset”
  • Win medals at tournaments and other competitive events
  • Gain acceptance into higher-level playing groups
  • Become an IPTPA Certified Level 1 Coach and Level 2 Teaching Professional

What Has Been the Primary Aim of Your Coaching Practice?

From the beginning, the primary aim of Coach Mark Pickleball has been to make a positive impact on players, clubs, community recreation centers, and the broader pickleball community.

These photographs show some of the happy clients and pickleball community members I’ve had the privilege of working with over the years.

Do You Encourage Clients to Play Competitive Events?

Yes, absolutely. Shootouts, tournaments, round robins, and ladder events provide valuable opportunities to test your skills and measure your development.

Whether you win or lose, the goal is to learn, improve, and become more comfortable performing under pressure. Competition is a crucible that keeps you humble, reveals what you need to work on, and motivates continuous improvement.

I began playing tournaments in September 2019. Since then, I have competed in 50 events—10 in Washington and Canada and 40 in Arizona. Visit my Tournament Results page to see my overall results and podium photos.

Do You Volunteer with the Pickleball Club?

Yes, since May 2026, I’ve been leading the weekly PB 201 Skills Clinic called Build Better Fundamentals. I’ve also been helping Sandy Donaldson and Matt Halphen introduce the popular Shootout round robin event to club members.

In August 2026, I entered into an Independent Contractor Agreement with the SCHH Pickleball Club and Community Association. This agreement allows me to privately coach club members.

I continue to lead the PB 201 clinics as well as support Shootout events.

What Does Pickleball Mean to You and Your Clients?

For many of my clients, pickleball provides an opportunity to exercise, stay fit, learn a fun game, compete, and develop meaningful social connections.

For some, pickleball has helped them through difficult times. For others, it provides a way to remain active, engaged, and—in every sense of the phrase—“in the game.”

For me, my license plate says it all:
